When I first arrived at Northwestern, I remember the event I had the highest expectations for was the Fall Org Fair, the place where I would finally meet all the groups I would internet-stalk when researching NU during my college application cycle.
Truthfully speaking, weeks before the fair, I spent hours on social media looking up information on the clubs I planned on joining. However, even with all the hours I spent immersed on Instagram, TikTok and Google, most of the time I yearned for more than just a Canva post. I wanted to hear the voices of the founders or presidents behind these clubs explaining why these groups are so special.
When I arrived at the Org Fair, I could learn more about the groups that impact our campus, but I also noticed there weren’t many Latino organizations. Although I was sad about it at first, seeing the support networks existing Latino organizations had created on their own inspired me. It reminded me of the famous saying by Spanish poet Antonio Machado: “Traveler, there is no road; you make your own path as you walk.” When there are no existing support networks or resources, we must create them ourselves.
NU’s Latino community is made up of leaders whose stories are oftentimes overlooked. Through El Diario, we aim to highlight the student groups that impact our campus daily, and we wish to accomplish this in a very special format.
Enter our new original series, “Clubs en Clubs,” a platform where Latino student leaders from various organizations sit face to face, similar to Variety’s “Actors on Actors,” to converse, reflect and share the stories behind the organizations they run day to day.
In each episode, we will bring in two or more Latino leaders from two organizations with similar missions operating in distinct spaces on campus. Some of the “Clubs en Clubs” episodes we hope to launch will focus on music, dance, professional development, community and more.
This is not the first time The Daily has used this format; it was first introduced through our “Actors on Actors” series in January to highlight student actors. “Clubs en Clubs” reinvents the series from a Latino perspective, focusing on the voices and experiences that unite our community.
This project is also El Diario’s first original multimedia series, making it an especially significant project. El Diario is proud and honored to give life to this space and amplify the stories that deserve to be heard.
We hope that “Clubs en Clubs” not only informs community members about these clubs, but also inspires the Latino community and its allies to create their own initiatives based on what they believe is missing on campus.
