Northwestern men’s golf traveled to Vero Beach, Fla., to compete at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational hosted by South Florida, where they dropped from joint second to fourth place during the final round Monday morning. The tournament marked the team’s third consecutive fourth-placed finish this season.
The Wildcats, ending the weekend at 24-under-par, shot a combined team score of 840 (273-279-280). Memphis squeaked out the team title over Florida Gulf Coast, with the two teams finishing at 28-and-27-under-par, respectively, after a final day push from FGCU.
Senior Daniel Svärd led the pack, finishing tied for eighth, the highest of the six ’Cats, with a final score of nine-under-par.
Redshirt sophomore Rowan Sullivan started the tournament off strong with a notable eagle on the third hole in the first round, ultimately finishing tied for 16th at six-under-par.
Junior Jeremy Chen and freshman Monty Holcombe, ending the weekend tied at 18th and 31st, respectively, also finished below par. Chen made a particularly impressive comeback in the third round after a double-bogey on the second hole, which he followed up with five birdies and two bogies that boosted him to finish five-under-par.
The bottom two scorers, sophomore Mark Gazi and junior Archie Finnie, finished seven-over and 15-over, respectively.
Next week, the ’Cats will attempt to defend their 2024 title at The Clerico in Tulsa, Okla., where NU alum Cameron Adam won the individual title last year.
