No. 48 Northwestern began postseason play tied for a ninth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships this weekend. No. 65 senior Daniel Svärd led the Wildcats, tying for 14th individually.
The ’Cats played at the par-70, 7,003-yard Witch Hollow course at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Oregon. The course is where Tiger Woods made history in 1996 by winning his third consecutive U.S. Amateur Championship.
NU finished the tournament 18-over as a team. Its lowest round came in the final round of the tournament.
The ’Cats finished round one five-over par, round two 12-over par and round three one-over par.
Svärd jumped up 37 places in the final round of the tournament with his five-under par finish. Svärd finished both rounds one and two three-over par.
UCLA took home the team and individual hardware, placing first as both a team and having an individual first-place finish from freshman Josh Kim.
Propelled by an 11-under round two finish, UCLA finished the tournament eight-under par as a team. Kim individually finished eight-under par as well.
Following Svärd on the leaderboard for NU was junior Jeremy Chen, who finished the tournament five-over par, tied for 29th place. His lowest round came in round one, when he finished 3-under par. He followed up with five-over-par and three-over-par finishes in rounds two and three, respectively.
Senior Ethan Tseng finished the tournament six-over par, tied for 34th place. Redshirt sophomore Rowan Sullivan finished eight-over par, tied for 47th place.
Freshman Monty Holcombe played rounds one and two before being substituted by sophomore Mark Gazi in round three of the tournament.
Holcombe finished round one nine-over par and round two five-over par. Gazi finished round three two-over.
The last time the ’Cats competed at the Hoosier Collegiate in Bloomington, Indiana, Holcombe picked up his season low.
As a team, NU finished with one eagle and 45 birdies. Sullivan secured the eagle for the ’Cats on hole 18 during round three.
Next, NU will wait for the NCAA Regional Championships field to be released on Wednesday on Golf Channel.
The Regionals will be held from Monday, May 18, to Wednesday, May 20.
