No. 12 Northwestern began its postseason in Havre de Grace, Maryland, on Friday after winning the Silverado Showdown in its final regular-season tournament. While hoping to win consecutive tournaments, the Wildcats took home fifth at the Big Ten Championships.
Freshman Hsin Tai Lin led the Wildcats as she finished in a four-way tie for fifth place individually, her second top-five finish of the season.
Despite little movement in the standings throughout the weekend, NU improved as it spent more time on the course. After hitting a team 5-over and sitting in fifth place through play Friday, the ’Cats notched rounds of three-over and two-over on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Sunday’s round was the second-best team performance on the day, trailing only the winner, No. 5 Oregon’s team 12-under.
Lin finished with a 2-under 214. She was one of four players in the field to shoot par or lower on each round of the tournament.
In the first round, she carded three birdies to three bogeys. Lin notched four birdies, one bogey and one double-bogey on day two. In round three, she carded five birdies and four bogeys. Lin sank a long-distance putt on the 17th hole in the final round, pumping her fist as she saw out a top-five finish.
Sophomore Ashley Yun finished in a tie for 15th by shooting a 2-over 218. She shot a one-over-73 in the first round, a 1-under-71 in the second round and a 2-over-74 in the third round.
Junior Dianna Lee finished the weekend in 19th place, shooting a three-over 219. Her strongest round came on the final day when she shot 2-under par
Senior Lauryn Nguyen, who was named Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Week April 10 after winning the individual championship at the Silverado Showdown, shot an 8-over 224 for 40th place.
