Northwestern graduate student guard Boo Buie was named to the 2024 Bob Cousy Award watch list Monday. Buie was one of five finalists for the award last season, which recognizes the best point guard in college basketball.

The Albany, New York, native is one of three Big Ten guards tabbed to the preseason watch list, joining Maryland’s Jahmir Young and Penn State’s Ace Baldwin Jr.

“The point guards that have been named to the 2024 Bob Cousy Award Watch List truly embody the skills and characteristics that made Bob Cousy the ‘Houdini of the Hardwood,’” John Doleva, the president and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, said in a Monday press release.

Buie, now entering his fifth and final campaign in Evanston, led the Wildcats to their second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance last season with a team-high 17.3 points and 4.5 assists per game, earning All-Big Ten honors along the way. Buie was also named to the 2023-24 preseason All-Big Ten team.

His 588 points in 2022-23 are the third-most scored in a season in program history. He needs 498 points to eclipse NU’s all-time scoring record (2,038 points) held by John Shurna.

The watch list will go through two rounds of cuts, first in late January when the list will be trimmed in half to 10 players before it is cut to five in late February.

Buie and the ‘Cats will commence their quest for back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in their season-opener on Nov. 6 against Binghamton.
