Four members of the Northwestern men’s tennis team competed at the Big Ten Individual Championships in Madison, Wisconsin over the weekend.
In doubles, sophomore transfer Dylan Charlap and sophomore Vincent Yang saw success, reaching the quarterfinals after defeating Sam Scherer and Benjamin Pomeranets of Indiana 6-3. In the subsequent round, they fell to Matthew Fullerton and Patrik Meszaros of Wisconsin 6-2.
Freshman Cooper Han partnered freshman Jacob Golden, and the pair lost 6-4 to Collin Beduhn and Sachiv Kumar of Wisconsin in the first round.
In singles, Charlap and Yang each won their first rounds in a third-set super-tiebreak. Yang competed against Niels Van Der Sijs of Nebraska and won 6-3, 6-7(0), 10-3. In the second round, Yang faced the No. 5 seed Jeremy Zhang of Illinois and fell 7-6(1), 6-2.
Charlap beat Arnav Bhandari of Michigan 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-7. He was then swiftly defeated by Facundo Yunis of Indiana 6-1, 6-1.
Golden faced Kumar in his first round of singles and fell 6-2, 6-1. Han lost to Aidan Atwood of Indiana by the same score.
Han flew through the backdraw, defeating Bhandari 6-3, 6-4 and Van Der Sijs 6-3, 6-3. In the backdraw final, he faced Pierce Shaya of Michigan and won 4-6, 6-4, 12-10.
Golden also competed in the backdraw, defeating Henry Bilicic of Nebraska 7-5, 6-3, before falling to Shaya 6-4, 6-2.
Yang and Charlap competed in extra matches as well. They both lost in tight three-setters to Danial Rakhmatullayev of Michigan State and Oliver Olsson of Wisconsin, respectively. Yang lost 6-3, 6-7(6), 10-6, while Charlap lost 5-7, 7-6(3), 10-7.
Next on deck for the ’Cats is the ITA Conference Masters in San Diego November 6-9.
