No. 44 Northwestern had a busy weekend, facing three opponents in two days as it opened Big Ten play. The No. 26-ranked duo of sophomore Carter Pate and junior Greyson Casey brought their perfect season-match record to 12-0, beating No. 39 duo Pierre Mouesca and Matthew Burton.
The weekend started March 6 with a 4-2 win over Washington. NU secured the doubles point early, continuing their best doubles season since 2020 with 12 wins.
In singles, the Huskies battled back. No. 1 singles Pate and No. 6 singles, senior Chad Miller, lost in straight sets, but Ethan Schiffman’s 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Brett Pearson at No. 4 singles secured the victory for the ’Cats.
On Sunday, the NU’s fortune took a turn for the worse with a 1-4 loss against then-No. 58 Oregon. The match was hard-fought, with four of the six singles matches going to three sets. However, the ’Cats couldn’t pull through, losing 2 of those matches.
Oregon’s Vlad Breazu and Declan Galligan took the deciding match for the doubles point against Schiffman and Cyrus Majhoob 6-4. Freshman Cooper Han recorded NU’s only win of the match 6-4, 6-3 against Galligan at No. 6 singles.
The ’Cats rebounded with a 4-0 sweep over Creighton later Sunday. The doubles point was close yet again, but Miller and Vincent Yang held strong 6-3 to seal the win.
NU didn’t drop a set in a dominant singles performance. Pate dropped just four games in his 6-3, 6-1 rout of Kirtan Patel. Yang followed soon after with a 6-2, 6,2 win against Jack McMahon. Mahjoob bagged the match for the ‘’Cats with his 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Yuma Daijima.
Northwestern continues its 13-4 season on Friday against No. 30 Wisconsin.
