An Evanston man faces felony and misdemeanor charges, including one felony count of attempted first-degree murder, after a non-fatal shooting at Evanston Hospital on Thursday night.
According to a Sunday news release from the Evanston Police Department, Christian Haywood, 28, was taken into custody after firing a gun in the hospital emergency room.
The release said two security officers sustained injuries, one from a gunshot and one from a bite. The shooting victim, a 33-year-old woman, is in stable condition after undergoing surgery for her injuries.
In a Thursday night news release, EPD said Haywood was voluntarily transported to the hospital after the Crisis Alternative Response Evanston Team contacted him near the Taco Bell on Sherman Avenue, where he “appeared to be suffering from an unknown mental health condition.”
While at the hospital, the man became agitated, and security arrived at the room, according to EPD. The man pulled a Ruger LCP MAX .380 caliber handgun from his belongings and fired it at least three times, according to the Sunday release.
Haywood was detained until EPD arrived at the scene. The hospital emergency room remained under lockdown until the following morning.
EPD said they discovered a second firearm, unrelated to the incident, during a search of Haywood’s property.
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the felony and misdemeanor charges, and Haywood is scheduled for a detention hearing at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
