The time to vote early in the general election, which will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 5, is fast approaching. Early voting gives voters more opportunities to send in their ballots either in person or by mail in most states, including Illinois. Here’s some important information about the process in Evanston.
Early voting — Monday, Oct. 21 to Monday, Nov. 4
A full list of the in-person early voting locations for suburban Cook County residents is on the Cook County Clerk’s website. In Evanston, early voting will take place at the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center, located at 2100 Ridge Ave., in Room G-300.
Those registering to vote early for the first time or filing address changes will need two forms of ID, one of which must include their current address.
Voting by mail — Deadline to apply is Thursday, Oct. 31
Voters who applied for mail-in ballots for the primary elections do not need to re-apply to receive ballots for the general election. However, voters who applied by paper must re-apply for the general election.
A paper ballot will be sent to residents’ addresses after they apply to vote by mail either online or by calling the Cook County Clerk’s Office.
Additionally, as of 2022, Cook County is offering the option of “permanent vote by mail.” If voters sign up for this option, they will get mailed a ballot for all subsequent elections.
Mail-in ballots can be delivered either by mail or through one of Cook County’s mail ballot drop boxes.
Voting on Election Day — Tuesday, Nov. 5
Voters who still need to register on Election Day can use the Your Voter Information Tool on the County Clerk’s website to find their polling location. They will only be able to register and vote at their home precinct.
Those registering to vote for the first time must present two forms of ID.
