Incumbent Ald. Tom Suffredin (6th) is leading by 292 votes in the 6th Ward City Council race against challenger Candance Chow, according to preliminary results from the Cook County Clerk’s office as of 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Suffredin and Chow currently hold 1,721 and 1,429 votes, respectively. Complete results are not immediately available for the race as mail-in ballots postmarked before April 1 still need to be counted.
Suffredin has served as a councilmember since 2017 and has focused his campaign on improving parks, public buildings and infrastructure while emphasizing the need for transparency in government operations.
Chow served on the Evanston/Skokie School District 65 board from 2013 to 2020, as finance chair for several years and as board president from 2016 to 2017.
She has addressed housing affordability and community safety in her campaign, highlighting her financial management experience to tackle the city’s current challenges.
The race has become increasingly heated, with both candidates leveling ethical allegations against each other. Since early February, Chow has widely criticized Suffredin’s involvement in lobbying efforts in Springfield. Meanwhile, Suffredin has raised questions about Chow’s tenure on the Evanston/Skokie School District 65 Board of Education.
At the time of publication, neither candidate had responded to requests for comment.
This is a developing story, and will be updated as more information becomes available.
