Illinois House Majority Leader and State Rep. Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston) endorsed Mayor Daniel Biss on Tuesday in the race to represent Illinois’ 9th Congressional District.
In a letter sent out by Biss’ campaign Tuesday, Gabel expressed her support for Biss’s leadership, urging voters to choose him because the “future is on the line.”
“We need leaders who can fight and win. Leaders who don’t just point out problems, but work day and night to solve them,” Gabel wrote. “In this election, I strongly believe that person is Daniel Biss.”
Originally from Evanston, Gabel has represented the Illinois’ 18th Congressional District since 2010. She was appointed as the state’s House Majority Leader in 2023.
In May, U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) announced she would not seek reelection, opening up a crowded race to fill her seat. Schakowsky endorsed Biss as her successor in early January.
In addition to Gabel and Schakowsky, Biss has received endorsements from numerous Democrats, including U.S. Rep. Sean Casten (D-Downers Grove), U.S. Rep. Bill Foster (D-Naperville), U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) as well as other current and former local leaders.
U.S. Rep. Chuy García (D-Chicago) also announced his support for Biss on Tuesday. In a news release, García said Biss “shows up when it matters,” and “delivered results no matter who stood in his way.”
Gabel’s and García’s endorsements come days after Evanston councilmembers endorsed other congressional candidates. Ald. Tom Suffredin (6th) endorsed State Sen. Laura Fine on Friday and Ald. Matt Rodgers (8th) backed State Sen. Mike Simmons (D-Chicago) on Wednesday.
In response to Gabel’s endorsement, Biss expressed his gratitude for her support.
“Robyn Gabel is a dedicated community leader and a proven champion for working families, and I’m honored to have her support,” Biss wrote in the Tuesday news release. “We’ve worked together for years and never shied away from standing up for what is right, and that’s the fight I’ll bring to Washington as we take on Donald Trump.”
