If Barbie ever polished off a six-pack of Monster Energy in one sitting, stole a motorcycle and crashed it into a glitter factory, you’d get something pretty close to KATSEYE’s new single “Gnarly” — a song that manages to be chaotic, sparkly and unapologetically bold in the most unique way possible.
By the time the multinational girl group dropped “Gnarly” on April 30, I wasn’t sure what to expect — and after listening, I still wasn’t.
The song hits like a sugar rush with glitchy vocals and bass heavy enough to shake some teeth loose. It’s busy, it’s loud and it’s nothing like the polished pop we thought we’d signed up for last year.
And that’s kind of the point.
For fans, or EYEKONS, who have been following KATSEYE since their debut EP “SIS (Soft Is Strong),” “Gnarly” is a fast pivot.
The group’s previous tracks “Touch” and “Debut” leaned into a dreamy, almost-delicate, pop vibe. That whole era introduced the world to the group with soft synths, angelic harmonies and a sense of unity that made them seem like a next-gen international girl group anyone could root for.
Formed through HYBE and Geffen Records’ “The Debut: Dream Academy” global audition show streaming now on Netflix, KATSEYE began building an international fanbase before they’d even released a single. The group’s promotional rollout was sleek, with generally-glowing public reception, culminating with their newest single — the group’s first Billboard Hot 100 entry.
KATSEYE didn’t come to play it safe, from the first jarring synth in “Gnarly” to the last shout. The production feels messy at first, but many music admirers will soon recognize its purposeful creativity. The track itself blends loud instrumentals with spoken-word verses full of attitude, amplified by the use of autotune for an experimental-type beat.
It’s a polished kind of chaos that definitely takes a few listens to grow into, but only reaffirms the group’s conviction to carve their name into the music industry, especially as artists still early in their careers.
Fan discussions online have been relatively lively. While some listeners embraced the track’s chaotic energy and experimental sound, others expressed confusion or disappointment. The single’s commercial success, however, silenced this divide.
What’s most exciting about “Gnarly” is what it says about the group’s future. Rather than doubling down on what already worked with “SIS,” KATSEYE swerved hard in a new direction, while still maintaining their authenticity. This isn’t a rebrand so much as a reminder that they’re still figuring themselves out, and they’re inviting us along for the ride.
I respect the risk. It’s not a song I’d put on for a study session or walk across the Lakefill, but it’s just the right amount of energy and attitude for a women-empowering moment.
If this type of music is the first look for their upcoming “BEAUTIFUL CHAOS” EP, then KATSEYE is fully leaning into the chaotic beauty. Clearly, they aren’t afraid to carve out a space in the industry on their own terms.
Whether listeners love it, hate it or can’t stop dancing to it, one thing is certain: KATSEYE is quickly evolving. “Gnarly” might not be for everyone, but it shows that the group is willing to take creative risks, and that their boldness sets them apart in today’s pop landscape.
