Northwestern University in Qatar will hold its graduation in-person on May 4, NU-Q Dean and CEO Marwan Kraidy announced in a Tuesday email sent to the NU-Q community.
“We recognize that members of our community may hold different expectations or preferences in the current context,” Kraidy wrote. “We approach this moment with care, respect, and a shared commitment to celebrating our students in a way that is meaningful and safe.”
The NU-Q building is also “open and accessible and services are resuming gradually,” Kraidy wrote.
The NU-Q building has been closed since March 29 after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps labeled U.S. universities “legitimate targets” March 28.
NU-Q has been in remote operations since Feb. 28, following a series of Iranian strikes that targeted Qatar and other Gulf Arab states in response to a U.S.-Israel joint-military operation. Kraidy wrote in a March 17 email that NU-Q would remain in remote operations until the end of the semester, which ends April 30.
NU-Q has implemented shelter-in-place orders, evacuations and a transition to remote operations in response to conflict in the region.
“We hope to see many faculty and staff in Doha for the graduation ceremony,” Kraidy wrote in the Tuesday email.
