The Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center, located at 1832 Church St., will be open as a warming center for community members from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday Monday, Jan. 19, according to a Sunday news release from the city.
The city announced it will offer the warming center just hours after the National Weather Service issued a cold weather advisory for several regions in Illinois, including Cook County, warning of wind chills as low as 20 to 25 degrees below zero.
The warning will remain in effect until 10 a.m. Monday. Those who seek transportation, additional information or require shelter outside of listed hours should call the 311 Center at 311, the Evanston Police Department’s non-emergency number or 847-448-4311.
The news release also provided several tips for residents to prepare for the extreme weather, including wearing several layers, minimizing time outside and checking on at-risk neighbors, including elderly and disabled community members.
