Junior Neena Feldman and sophomore Mika Dagan Fruchtman fell short of NCAA Tournament qualification at the ITA Central Sectional Championships in College Station, Texas.
The junior-sophomore pair has had recent success, reaching the final at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Oct. 21, but falling just one set short and losing their opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Tournament doubles draw.
The ITA Central Sectional, which was held from Thursday through Sunday, provided another opportunity for players to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships, as the champion, finalist and third place in the doubles draw earn bids to the national tournament.
Feldman and Dagan Fruchtman were the only two Wildcat representatives to compete in this event.
The duo started off the tournament strong, upsetting the top seed and No. 14 ranked doubles pair in the country, Jessica Bernales and Lily Jones of Michigan, in a three-set battle, 6-1, 1-6, 10-8.
After advancing to the quarterfinals, Feldman and Dagan Fruchtman faced Iowa State’s Stanislava Shulzhenko and Mari Paz Alberto Vilar. The match was another three-setter decided by razor-thin margins, but NU ultimately fell 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.
Next on the women’s schedule is the final tournament of the fall season, the Notre Dame Invitational, which begins Nov. 14.
