In Northwestern’s season opener, the Wildcats’ defense stifled Mercyhurst all game long. NU never trailed as senior forward Nick Martinelli’s 15 first-half points made up for a slow-starting ’Cats offense. It was transfer junior forward Arrinten Page that led all scorers with 18 points and 12 rebounds, making him the first NU player to record a double-double in over two decades.

Transfer junior guard Jayden Reid was greeted with a familiar face for his first game in a NU jersey, Philadelphia 76ers rookie V.J. Edgecombe. Edgecombe, the NBA Rookie of the Year frontrunner, was teammates with Reid at Long Island Lutheran High School.

After a commanding win, the ’Cats will continue non-conference play against Boston University at Welsh-Ryan Arena Friday.
