Two juveniles are in custody after spraying mace at two Evanston grocery stores on Monday, Evanston Police Department Cmdr. Ryan Glew confirmed.
EPD first responded to a call about two juveniles spraying mace at Jewel-Osco on Chicago Avenue at about 11:40 a.m., Glew said. By the time the police arrived, the juveniles had fled the scene, he added.
The same juveniles sprayed the mace at the Whole Foods on Chicago Avenue “shortly after,” Glew said. EPD took the two Chicago teenagers into custody at the scene.
“No customers were affected by the mace at Jewel,” Glew said. “At Whole Foods, one customer (was) transported for exposure to mace, and the second customer later called to report burning eyes and inquired about the treatment.”
Currently, the juveniles appear not to have any specific targets or motive, Glew said. The investigation is ongoing.
The juveniles were referred to court and released to their parents Monday night, he said.
