Northwestern took down its web page for Student Enrichment Services and redirected the link to a “Community and Belonging” page expressing that NU is reviewing its policies to ensure compliance with recent changes in federal and state laws and requirements.
The “Community and Belonging” link the same page that other offices on campus have updated to redirect their users to — including the Women’s Center and the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center — since President Donald Trump’s January executive orders to end DEI initiatives.
Though a federal judge largely blocked this order Feb. 21, universities nationwide have faced threats to federal funding if they do not comply. A Feb. 14 warning from the Department of Education to university leaders gave Universities two weeks to comply with the updated guidelines.
Previously, the University’s SES page declared a partnership with students who are first-generation, lower-income, “Dreamers” and undocumented.
The web page said that SES was working towards an NU that was “welcoming, supportive, and accessible for all students.”
It also included links to resources for books and supplies, winter weather gear, technology, food accessibility and legal resources.
All of NU’s undergraduate schools and many other departments on the Evanston campus have removed references to DEI on their websites since February.
