For more than 150 years, the Grosse Point Lighthouse has shined brightly on Lake Michigan. A short walk from Northwestern’s campus, the lighthouse provides students and Evanston residents with a place to admire historical architecture.
The lighthouse was built by the U.S. government in 1873 as a navigational aid marking the approach to Chicago’s harbor. Constructed of brick, metal and glass, the lighthouse stands at 113-feet-tall. Today, the lighthouse continues to privately operate.
Visitors can climb up the 141 stairs of the lighthouse and visit an exhibit that features information about the Lady Elgin shipwreck, a ship that sank in Lake Michigan in 1860. The lighthouse is open June through September on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
For those who appreciate history and architecture, the lighthouse is a perfect place to visit, even in the colder months of the year.
