Following a breakout third season as Northwestern’s starting cornerback, redshirt junior Theran Johnson received a Second Team All-Big Ten coaches selection Tuesday. Johnson tallied 53 total tackles, 10 passes defended, two interceptions and a defensive touchdown this season.
Johnson told The Daily in October that he looked to emulate the leadership styles of his former veteran teammates in 2024, especially current West Virginia cornerback Garnett Hollis Jr.
“(I’m) just taking on a more vocal role, trying to lead by example every day in practice,” Johnson said. “I’m not taking reps off, and I’m just trying to set a good example for the younger folks.”
While Johnson was the lone Wildcat to earn a spot on an All-Big Ten team this year, 10 NU players received honorable mention all-conference selections.
Redshirt junior linebacker Mac Uihlein, graduate student linebacker Xander Mueller, junior safety Devin Turner, redshirt freshman safety Damon Walters, redshirt sophomore defensive end Anto Saka and redshirt junior defensive end Aidan Hubbard nabbed honorable mention plaudits on the defensive side of the ball.
Offensively, graduate student wide receiver A.J. Henning and redshirt junior tackles Josh Thompson and Caleb Tiernan all earned honorable mention selections.
Redshirt sophomore running back Joseph Himon II, who once led the FBS in average kick return yards earlier in the season, received an honorable mention spot as a return specialist.
Coach David Braun will welcome the next crop of all-conference hopefuls as ’Cats’ signees during Wednesday’s early National Signing Day period. This marks the earliest national signing day in the modern college football era.
