The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled on Wednesday that neuroscience Ph.D. candidate Peter Salvino drowned in an accident. Salvino’s body was recovered from Chicago’s Diversey Harbor on Lake Michigan in late December.

The Medical Examiner’s Office said alcohol intoxication was a contributing factor to his death.

Salvino was last seen Dec. 18 around midnight after leaving a party, and his phone was pinged near Diversey Harbor at 12:31 a.m. Calls and texts went unanswered after that time.

A high-profile search occurred after he went missing. His family confirmed that Salvino’s body belonged to him.
