Internet service provider Comcast has installed about 40 new Wi-Fi hotspots across Evanston, including one bordering The Great Room on campus.
Comcast Xfinity Internet subscribers will be able to access public and indoor Wi-Fi hotspots located mainly in north and downtown Evanston, the company announced Thursday. People not signed up to Comcast can access Internet at the locations for free until July 4.
Comcast spokesman Jack Segal said the company is trying to appeal to people who use on-the-go services, such as streaming video.
Hair salon shop Salon Lotus was one of six businesses in the city that received Wi-Fi access, according to a map on the city’s website that shows hotspot locations.
“(Wi-Fi access) is expected. It’s a given that you have to have it for business,” said Tanya Chuck, manager of the store, 808 Davis St. “It’s just convenient for people.”
