Body found in Lake Michigan may be Boehm

A body found in Lake Michigan this morning has not yet been identified as missing Communication freshman Trevor J. Boehm, university spokesman Al Cubbage said in a statement.

The body of a white man estimated to be in his 20s was seen in the lake near Montrose Harbor at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Chicago police. The body was seen about eight miles south of campus, near the 4500 block of N. Simonds Drive.

The man was pronounced dead at 8:45 a.m., according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner. The body is scheduled for examination sometime on Monday, at which point identification can be made.

Officers from University Police, Chicago Police and the Coast Guard found nothing when they searched the lake Thursday and Friday after some of Boehm’s belongings were found on a rock by the Lakefill. Boehm’s parents reported him missing Nov. 9, and his WildCARD and Marlock key have not been used since Nov. 5.

More details to come.

Statement by Alan K. Cubbage, Vice President, University Relations, Regarding Missing Northwestern StudentNovember 16, 2008 The Northwestern University Police Department was notified today (Nov. 16) that the body of a man was found early today in Lake Michigan near Montrose Harbor in Chicago. The body may be that of a missing Northwestern University student, Trevor J. Boehm, but no positive identification has been made at this time. Northwestern has been informed that the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office is expected to begin the process of making a formal identification on Monday afternoon. Northwestern University Police are assisting the Chicago Police Department in the investigation. Boehm, 20, a first-year student in the School of Communication from Monument, Col., had been reported missing last Sunday (Nov. 9). On Thursday (Nov.13), his jacket, which contained his Northwestern identification card, keys, and cell phone, was found among the rocks on the shore of Lake Michigan on Northwestern’s Evanston campus. A search of the lake was conducted Thursday and Friday by police and Coast Guard officers, but found nothing. University officials continue to be in contact with Trevor’s family and our thoughts are with them at this time. A vigil will be held at 8 p.m. Monday in Alice Millar Chapel to honor Trevor and to provide an opportunity for the campus community to comfort one another.
