NU student charged with DUI, hitting man with car

A student in the Kellogg Graduate School of Management was charged with driving under the influence and failure to yield to a pedestrian after he struck an Evanston man with his car, said Deputy Chief Joseph Bellino of Evanston Police Department.

Zain Koita, 26, of the 2200 block of West Diversey Avenue in Chicago, hit a 20-year-old man with his car while making a left turn from Sherman Avenue on to Elgin Road at about 10 p.m. Thursday, Bellino said. Koita told EPD he was leaving a Kellogg graduate student function when the accident occurred.

The pedestrian was taken to Evanston Hospital, 2650 Ridge Ave. Police did not know the extent of the victim’s injuries Friday afternoon.

The police report did not state Koita’s blood alcohol content at the time of the accident, Bellino said.

Koita is scheduled to appear at Circuit Court in Skokie on Apr. 4. He did not return phone calls from The Daily Sunday afternoon.
