Fresh from their weekend retreat, members of the Associated Student Government met Wednesday night to vote on caucus whips and create the position of rules clerk.

ASG Senate confirmed Eva Byerley, a Medill junior, as ASG’s rules clerk based on her three years of work in Senate and on the Rules Committee. Her duties will include overseeing town hall meetings between dorm senators and their constituents, in addition to ensuring legislation passed by ASG is carried out.

Dorm senators are supposed to meet with their residents once a quarter for a town hall meeting. In the past, this rule has not been strictly enforced.

Rules Committee chairman Dan Broadwell said he hopes the new rules clerk position will make it easier for meetings to happen more frequently.

“There was a call to have (town hall meetings) happen more often,” said Broadwell, a Communication junior.

Byerley said she looks forward to her post.

“I want to make sure everyone finds it easy (to hold town hall meetings),” Byerley said. “I want it to be easier for people to find someone to talk to.”

The position is new this year after Broadwell expressed the need for a vice chairperson.

The Senate also voted on informal leaders, or whips, of groups of senators with similar constituencies.

Weinberg sophomore Todd Lewis and Communication sophomore Audrey Chen were elected to represent dorms.

Byerley also was elected to represent fraternities and sororities.

Weinberg junior Jason Hawbecker will represent off-campus senators.

Weinberg sophomore Jennifer Jiggetts and McCormick sophomore Kunal Kumar will represent student groups.

The whips are liaisons between their respective caucuses and ASG’s Executive Board.
