Homeless man trashes BK registers, EPD reports

A man broke three cash registers with his bare hands early Wednesday morning after becoming angry when asked to leave Burger King, according to an Evanston Police Department report.

William L. Lucas, 57, who is homeless, was charged with felony criminal damage to property and misdemeanor criminal trespass at Burger King, 1740 Orrington Ave., according to the EPD report.

The incident began when Lucas entered Burger King shortly after 5 a.m. Wednesday and asked for change, the report stated. When the manager asked him to leave because of a previous incident in the restaurant, Lucas allegedly became extremely agitated and began damaging the cash registers.

The total cost of repairs to the cash registers is $2,686, according to an invoice provided to police.

Lucas fled the restaurant but officers found him on the corner of Church Street and Benson Avenue, according to the report. He is scheduled to appear May 20 at Circuit Court in Skokie.

Mario Delgado, a Burger King manager, said he did not witness the incident but that the registers were fixed when he went to work Thursday at 4 p.m.

After Lucas was in custody at EPD, police also charged him with two previous crimes involving threats to a StreetWise vendor. On April 18, the vendor told police Lucas had approached him, pulled out a box cutter and threatened to cut him. Then, on April 25, the vendor reported that Lucas threatened him again with the box cutter.

Both times Lucas fled and was not found by police. He is charged with two counts of aggravated assault for those incidents and is scheduled to appear June 4 at Circuit Court in Skokie on the assault charges.
