Israel Week starts with a bang on the drums at the Lakefill

Israel Week kicked off Tuesday night with 25 students banging on African drums around a Lakefill bonfire with members of King David’s Peace Drummers.

The Israeli performance group integrated drumming and singing to signify their hope for a peaceful world. Students read poems to honor the memory of soldiers who have died defending Israel and to celebrate the state’s founding.

“We can’t understand the emotions of people who are in Israel right now,” said Meredith Kesner, president of Students for Israel and a Medill junior. “But we can take a moment to honor those who have defended and continue to defend the state of Israel.”

Tonight the group is sponsoring an Israeli Independence Day party at Cafe Hookah, 726 Clark St., from 9 p.m. to midnight. Other events will continue throughout the week.
