Northwestern sabre fencer Kate Frambach retreated down the strip one final time Saturday with the Wildcats’ title hopes pinned squarely on her shoulders.

The Midwest Conference championship had come down to the final point of the final bout, and if NU was to successfully defend its crown, Frambach needed a touch.

So when Frambach stuck out her blade and hit Notre Dame fencer Destanie Milo’s arm, the Cats, the crowd at the Joyce Center and even the referee went wild.

“It was kind of like that last-second jump shot you pull out at the end,” Northwestern coach Laurie Schiller said. “The referee kind of jumped up in the air and pointed at Kate, and the place erupted.”

Frambach’s final touch in South Bend, Ind., gave NU its third consecutive conference title. The Cats defeated runner-up Notre Dame 425-420, getting first-place finishes from the sabre and foil squads in addition to the
