Northwestern University in Qatar has reinstated its Summer Internship Grant Program for 2026, NU-Q career services manager Ahmad Alony and Maggie Smith, NU Career Advancement student career advising assistant director, wrote in a Tuesday email to NU-Q SIGP applicants.
SIGP, offered to students on both NU’s Evanston and Qatar campuses, provides funding for undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who undertake unpaid summer internships.
Following its reinstatement, SIGP at NU-Q will only fund internships that are remote or located in students’ current countries of residence for this summer, according to Alony and Smith’s email.
The announcement comes after the two sent an April 8 email informing applicants NU-Q had suspended SIGP for the summer.
“The NU-Q Summer Internship Grant Program (SIGP) was temporarily paused as part of the University’s broader travel-related review in light of the current global situation, consistent with Northwestern Qatar’s safety-first approach and in light of the transition of academic operations to remote delivery,” a University spokesperson wrote in a statement to The Daily.
NU-Q has initiated a number of safety measures, including shelter-in-place advisories, remote operations and student housing evacuations, since Feb. 28, when Iran launched a series of strikes on Gulf Arab states, including Qatar, following a U.S.-Israel joint-military operation.
Forty-two NU-Q students sent a petition to administrators April 9 requesting they reconsider the SIGP suspension.
The Undergraduate Language Grant, which provides students up to $5,000 to study a foreign language in the U.S. or abroad over the summer, was suspended at NU-Q on April 8 but reinstated after NU-Q students appealed the decision in an email.
According to the Northwestern Career Advancement website, NU-Q SIGP applicants were slated to be notified of their application statuses on March 31.
Applicants will “receive a separate email in the next few days” about their application results, Alony and Smith wrote in the Tuesday email.
