Weinberg sophomore Alan Hu and SESP junior Noah Cohrs were issued restrictions on their campaign by the Election Commission in the Associated Student Government presidential race on Friday.
The Hu-Cohrs campaign is now “prohibited from distributing flyers outside of campaign staff” and cannot print more flyers, according to the warning. Additionally, the commission wrote the campaign has to remove all campaign flyers from residential buildings.
The restrictions were in relation to four different sections of the ASG Election Guidelines, which give the Election Commission the right to penalize campaigns and call for mutual respect in the race. According to the Election Commission, candidates Weinberg junior Gauri Adarsh and Medill junior John Sisco sent in photographs of a Hu-Cohrs campaign poster on the door of Adarsh’s dorm. The Election Commission wrote they found the Hu-Cohrs campaign’s distribution of flyers to “actors” who used them for “malicious intent” to be “negligent and irresponsible.”
No one on the Hu-Cohrs campaign placed the poster on Adarsh’s door, as they provided evidence that their staff was at The Rock from 6 to 11 p.m., the Election Commission wrote. Additionally, the Hu-Cohrs campaign did not direct any non-campaign staff to place the poster on the door, the campaign told the Election Commission.
“I condemn anyone who uses our campaign materials in a way that constitutes intimidation and encourage everyone to act with civility and responsibility during the course of this campaign,” Cohrs wrote in a text message to The Daily.
Related incidents or violations of these restrictions will result in a strike for the Hu-Cohrs campaign.
All four ASG presidential campaigns were issued a strike for violating Northwestern and city rules Thursday. If a campaign is issued three strikes, it will be removed from the ballot.
Voting for the ASG presidential election opened Thursday at 7 p.m. and will close Saturday at 7 p.m. Students can vote on the ’Cats on Campus website.
