The Associated Student Government’s Student Activities Finance Committee announced $3.29 million in funding allocations to student groups for the 2026-27 academic year Friday.
The sum represents an increase of more than half a million dollars in funding for student groups compared to funding for the 2025-26 academic year.
Two hundred ninety student groups applied for ASG funding this year. SAFC’s $3.29 million comes from the ASG Activity Fee on students’ tuition bill. In addition, NU’s Office of the President will contribute $125,000 this year.
The University will also provide about $724,000 split between Mayfest Productions, A&O Productions and Northwestern University Dance Marathon.
“This is always the most stressful part of the year for SAFC, (and) really probably for ASG as a whole,” Medill junior and ASG Co-President John Sisco said. “It’s something student organizations are waiting on for the entirety of the year, so there was a lot of pressure and logistics that go into getting this done.”
In a Friday email sent to student organizations and obtained by The Daily, SAFC announced the allocations and wrote that the lower bound of funding requested by student organizations totaled about $4.68 million — roughly $800,000 more than ASG could allocate between SAFC funds and support from the administration.
A&O received about $360,000 in SAFC funding, the most of any group. SAFC, an ASG committee, allocated about $223,000 to ASG, primarily to fund specialized grants for student groups.
Other groups that received large sums from SAFC include Mayfest with about $172,000, the Chinese Students Association with about $89,000, Rock Climbing Club with about $87,000, For Members Only with about $75,000 and NU Formula Racing with about $76,000.
The total amount of money SAFC allocates to student groups could change by as much as several hundred thousand dollars in the next few weeks. Sisco said this is because money unspent by student groups gets “rolled back” into SAFC allocations for the following year.
“In the event that we do see rollback stocks remaining at the level they are now, allocations will likely increase for a number of student organizations after this point,” Sisco said.
SAFC will update the 2026 spring funding cycle allocations spreadsheet — which clubs receiving funds can access — to reflect adjustments made with rollbacks.
In previous years, student groups have received allocations in August or September. Sisco said SAFC hasn’t finalized a specific date, but student groups can expect to receive their allocations during Fall Quarter.
Student groups will be able to appeal to receive more funding at an ASG Senate meeting on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Harris Hall L07. The Senate has $60,000 for funding appeals.
Sisco said he is “incredibly impressed” with the SAFC team this year, adding that it has grown significantly from previous years.
“We definitely managed to institutionalize it, and sort of disperse the pressure and anxiety in a way that I think has been beneficial for our team and hopefully for the student body as a whole,” Sisco said.
