Communication senior Ryan Lien was elected as the interim parliamentarian for Associated Student Government at Wednesday’s meeting.
The election comes after the previous parliamentarian, SESP sophomore JJ Nabors-Moore, resigned last week.
Lien ran unopposed and will hold the position for Winter Quarter. By accepting, he gave up his senate seat, which would have lasted for the remainder of the Winter and Spring Quarters. A new parliamentarian will be elected in spring.
His resignation leaves the School of Communication without a senator. Lien was the only person who ran for Communication’s two seats in fall.
The parliamentarian presides over the Rules Committee, attends executive board meetings, hosts a weekly office hour with the speaker of the senate for senators, keeps attendance records and updates the ASG Code. Lien had been the acting parliamentarian following Nabors-Moore’s resignation.
Lien said he’s been on the Rules Committee for a year, and his enjoyment for the “legal thinking” element of ASG and its policies were key factors in his desire for interim parliamentarian.
“With an unexpected exit of our past parliamentarian, I really wanted someone who had experience on the Rules Committee to fill that seat, and I felt that I was qualified to do that,” Lien said.
ASG will be holding its yearly presidential election later this quarter with an exact date yet to be decided.
After last week’s amendment to the code, the Rules Committee no longer has control over the presidential election but can act if the election commission is unable to solve problems with election guidelines, Lien said.
“This meeting was about making sure everything is good to go for the upcoming election,” said Medill sophomore and Rules Committee member Amani Yousuf.
Since Lien previously served on the Rules Committee as a senator, ASG needed to elect a replacement.
Weinberg freshman Xander Hampton defeated Weinberg freshman Maeve McGill 7-6 for the Rules Committee position.
Hampton had run for the spot in the fall but did not win.
“I really care about this community and I want to do my best to help preserve and protect it and make it the best it can possibly be,” Hampton said.
