Northwestern is turning to its student artists this winter to bring some purple pride to Ryan Field.

The University announced a student mural contest for “big, bold and playful” artwork featuring NU purple as a stop for fans to take photos at the new football stadium, according to a Tuesday news release. 

The mural will be 78 feet, 4 inches by 15 feet, 4 inches.

Pat Ryan (Kellogg ’97, Pritzker ’97) and Lydia Ryan said in the announcement they were inspired by an Instagram wall in their neighborhood and that this idea was initially floated in 2020.

Undergraduate and graduate students will be able to submit an unlimited number of proposals until March 1. A winner will be chosen by March 31, and the submission will be transformed into a mural by the stadium’s design firm, according to the University.

Ryan Field renovations are slated for completion this fall, and the winning mural will be added before the stadium opens.
