Northwestern fell 86-82 to Ohio State in its Big Ten home opener Saturday, dropping to 0-2 in conference play after another costly defensive showing. Senior forward Nick Martinelli poured in 32 points for the Wildcats (5-4, 0-2 Big Ten), but the Buckeyes (7-1, 1-0 Big Ten) countered with 29 from forward Brandon Noel and controlled the paint down the stretch. NU led 44-40 at halftime and briefly pushed the margin behind a trio of second-half dunks from sophomore guard Angelo Ciaravino, but a cold offensive spell let Ohio State seize momentum late. Martinelli trimmed the deficit to one in the final seconds, but a missed one-and-one sealed a narrow loss at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
