No. 67 Northwestern traveled to the West Coast this weekend to close out its regular season against No. 39 Washington and No. 54 Oregon.
Despite two losses, the Wildcats (12-16, 4-9 Big Ten) secured a place in the Big Ten Tournament as the 10th seed, the last team in. Coach Arvid Swan’s squad held the tiebreaker over Purdue, which had the same conference record as NU, after defeating the Boilermakers 4-3 on March 16.
Playing the Huskies (16-7, 8-5 Big Ten) for the first time since 2002, the ’Cats fell 4-0.
Swan retained the doubles pairings that he introduced on Senior Day last Sunday against No. 4 Ohio State. However, NU failed to capture the doubles point as senior Felix Nordby and junior Chad Miller lost 6-1 at the No. 1 position, and graduate student Saiprakash Goli and senior Max Bengtsson lost 6-3 at the No. 3 spot.
At the No. 2 position, freshman Vincent Yang and sophomore Greyson Casey had their match unfinished while leading 5-2
The ’Cats also struggled in singles play, quickly losing three matches in straight sets. Casey lost 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot, followed by Miller falling 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 5 position. At the No. 1, Goli lost 6-3, 6-4 to Cesar Bouchelaghem, ranked the No. 35 player in the country, ending the match.
The matches at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 spots went unfinished. Nordby trailed 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 at the No. 2, Bengtsson led 6-3, 2-5 at the No. 4, and Yang trailed 7-6(4), 3-1 at the No. 6.
The ‘Cats then headed south to Eugene to take on the Ducks (13-12, 5-8 Big Ten), but they lost 4-1.
In doubles, the No. 3 match finished first as Bengtsson and Goli fell 6-3. Miller and Nordby won 6-3 at the No. 1 to make it even, so it was up to the No. 2 duo of Yang and Casey to capture the doubles point. Despite holding a 3-2 lead at one point in their match, the pair of underclassmen were defeated 6-4.
In singles, No. 5 Miller captured NU’s lone point of the weekend. His match was the first to finish, as he won 6-4, 6-4.
The match at the No. 1 slot finished next as Goli lost 6-1, 6-2. Casey also fell in straight sets at the No. 3, 6-3, 6-3. At the No. 2 spot, the Ducks clinched the match as Nordby lost in three sets after winning the first set in dominant fashion. He lost 1-6, 6-0, 7-5.
At the No. 4 spot, Bengtsson was trailing 5-7, 6-2, 3-0 in his unfinished match after winning the first set. At the No. 6 spot, Yang’s comeback attempt turned backward in the third set, as he was trailing 6-2, 3-6, 5-1.
NU plays its first round Big Ten Tournament match against No. 7-seeded Michigan at 1 p.m. on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio.
