For more than a decade, Lao Sze Chuan stood as a pillar of authentic Szechuan cuisine, bringing the bold, spicy flavors of China to Evanston. As part of Tony Hu’s renowned group of Chicago area restaurants, it quickly earned a reputation as one of the best Chinese restaurants in downtown Evanston.
Formerly located at 1633 Orrington Ave., Lao Sze Chuan became a spot for those seeking familiar flavors. From common favorites like dim sum to vegetable platters like Szechuan string beans, every dish showed the restaurant’s commitment to authenticity while also providing a diversity of options. Diners craving the numbing spice of pepper or the delicate warmth of hand-crafted dumplings frequently enjoyed their experience at Lao Sze Chuan.
Lao Sze Chuan’s Evanston location closed in summer 2024, but it’s Skokie location remains open. As we say goodbye, we honor the memories created around its tables, the shared meals that brought people together and the culinary excellence that made Lao Sze Chuan an unforgettable part of downtown Evanston.
