In its third match without graduate outside hitter Julia Sangiacomo, the team’s leader in kills, Northwestern fell to Ohio State in three sets Wednesday.
The match began with the Wildcats (10-11, 4-7 Big Ten) and the Buckeyes (8-12, 5-6 Big Ten) trading points until a 9-1 run by Ohio State. Four kills from sophomore outside hitter Averie Hernandez and three from senior middle blocker Leilani Dodson weren’t enough to revive NU, as the Buckeyes finished the set decisively 25-13.
Set two was the shortest of the night, with Ohio State quickly pulling ahead on errors from the ‘Cats. Two kills apiece from sophomore middle blocker Kennedy Hill and graduate outside hitter Maddy Chinn proved the majority of NU’s offense. Nineteen kills later, the Buckeyes had a 2-0 set lead.
The third set mirrored set one, but with three consecutive aces and a consistent offense, Ohio State completed the sweep 25-13. Senior setter Alexa Rousseau finished the match with 23 assists, as NU’s .091 hitting percentage was unable to keep pace with Ohio State’s .500.
The ‘Cats are set to face Indiana on Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
