Charges were issued this week in the fatal shooting of Shane Colombo.

After Northwestern doctoral student Shane Colombo was fatally shot last September, Diante Speed, 20, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder. He was arrested last Tuesday.

According to police, Colombo was walking with groceries near a bus stop in Rogers Park on Sept. 2, 2018 when he was caught in crossfire. He was not the intended target of the shooting.

Colombo, who was originally from San Clemente and Sun City, California, had arrived in Chicago that day to begin work in the psychology Ph.D. program.

A judge ordered no bail for Speed, based on his lengthy criminal history and his failure to appear on past charges.

Correction: A previous version of this story misstated Colombo’s place of origin as Arizona. He was from San Clemente and Sun City, California. The Daily regrets the error.
