A Chicago resident was arrested Thursday morning in connection with driving while under the influence in downtown Evanston.

The police originally arrived at the 800 block of Elgin Road for a motorist honking their horn, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said. Upon arrival, officers observed the driver of the vehicle asleep behind the wheel.

Once they were able to wake the motorist, the officers observed glassy, water bloodshot eyes and the scent of alcohol on his breath, Dugan said. His speech was slurred, and he had drool marks on his shirt.

After failing a field sobriety test, he was charged with one count of driving under the influence, a misdemeanor.
