City launches text and email reminders for trash collection

Forgetful Evanston residents can now sign up for weekly text and email reminders to take out the trash.

Once enrolled in the program, residents will receive a notification at 6 p.m. the night before their respective pickup day. In addition to refuse reminders, the city will also send out notifications for holiday collection schedules, seasonal yard waste, and spring and fall bulk trash collection.

“Offering text message and email reminders … gives residents an added level of convenience,” said Patrick Deignan, Evanston’s community engagement coordinator. “We know people have really busy lives here in Evanston and hopefully offering these courtesy reminders will make those lives just a little bit easier.”

The new program builds off a similar initiative launched this spring which notified residents before bulk trash collection. Deignan said more than 1,000 residents had signed up for those notifications.

The city also offers notifications for street cleaning, snow parking and beach status updates.

“This is just the latest text and email reminder we offer residents,” Deignan said. “We’re just adding this to our tool belt of notifications.”
