Valerie Gruest Slowing, an incoming freshman, qualified for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro thanks to a record-setting performance at the RBC Bahamas National Championships last week.

Slowing broke Guatamala Open National records in the 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter and 800 meter freestyle. Her time of 8:33.28 in the 800 meter freestyle earned her a trip to the Olympics while her times in the 200 meter and 400 meter races met Olympic “B” cutoff.

Slowing now joins her mother, Karin Slowing, and aunt Melanie Slowing as Olympic athletes as the elder two competed in 1984 and 2004 respectively.
