Green: What we learn and lose from demographics data

France doesn’t allow official opinion polls or censuses that include information about race or religion. All the really specific information that you can find on ethnic and religious groups the United States (who lives where, who’s rich, who’s poor, who voted for whom) just doesn’t exist there. There aren’t even statistics about the actual sizes of ethnic and religious demographic groups.

Al Jazeera recently interviewed M’hammed Henniche, head of the Union of Muslim Associations of Seine Saint-Denise, in an article titled “French Muslims ‘likely to vote for far left.'” As in the U.S., this is an election year in France, with the first round of the runoff election system recently completed and right-wing incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy behind.
