Fencing: Freshmen head to Junior Olympic Fencing Championships

Competing in the USFA 2012 Junior Olympic Fencing Championships is a dream attained for six freshmen at Northwestern. The reward means they will pass up the week off from competition the rest of the No. 4 Wildcats enjoy.

“For the girls that are going, it is a good event to get experience and compete,” coach Laurie Schiller said.

The tournament, which will take place in Salt Lake City, will feature several of the top young fencers from around the country competing with one another. Given that the event is a junior competition, only those fencers under the age of 20 can fence, restricting the NU fencers competing in the event to freshmen.

Like a traditional USFA event, the six Wildcat fencers competing will be taking part in competition as individuals. However, Rose Semmel, Courtney Dumas and Sonali Patel will be representing the
