Women’s Tennis: Mosolova, doubles team move on in singles tourney

Both Northwestern representatives in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships moved on Thursday to play another day.

Senior Maria Mosolova showed why she had the No. 10 ranking by handling No. 35 Irene Rehberger of South Florida, advancing in straight sets to the Round of 16, 6-4 6-4.

Things looked bleak for the No. 12-ranked unit of sophomore Linda Abu Mushrefova and freshman Nida Hamilton, who dropped their first set 4-6 against Maryland’s team of Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Jordaan Sanford. But the team regrouped, winning the final two sets 6-0, 6-2 to rally for the victory.

Mosolova advances to play No. 3 Hilary Barte of Stanford. Mosolova is familiar with Barte: The pair squared off in the Cardinal’s victory over NU in the team Championships, with Barte defeating Mosolova 6-4 6-1 to give her only her third dual match loss of the season.
