Matthew Alfonso, Weinberg freshman, is a new student DJ on campus. Though relatively new to the DJ business, he’s already been recruited to work at many parties and bar nights for different student groups. He loves DJing and is eager to encourage everyone to Facebook him for their next event. Or just to find out where he’s going to be DJing tomorrow night.

PLAY: How did you first start DJing?

Matthew Alfonso: My friend said she needed a DJ for the Twelfth Night party so I volunteered and then it kind of snowballed from there.

PLAY: So you haven’t DJed before Northwestern?

MA: No, I DJed a little bit at parties in Miami and some smaller clubs in Miami.

PLAY: What was your favorite party to DJ here at Northwestern?

MA: Probably the Twelfth Night one just because the venue was so cool, it was like this basement underground and it looked like this really dirty club. It was just like dirty red bricks everywhere and red lights and it was really cool.

PLAY: What type of music or songs do you think get people the most pumped up at parties?

MA: Eric Prydz’s “Call on Me” never fails and people like Justin Timberlake generally and “Promiscuous,” pretty much mainstream songs.

PLAY: What kind of equipment do you use?

MA: Just my laptop and either virtual DJ or just straight iTunes depending on how official it should sound.

PLAY: What is your favorite aspect of DJing?

MA: Just when you can tell that everyone’s into it and just having a great time. It’s like when you play a song that everybody likes there’s like this huge cheer and that’s really awesome and when you can keep them going for like two hours, over two hours that’s really fun.
