Niall Horan is back with the romance.
The Irish singer, who started his solo career in 2016 after One Direction mutually decided to split, released his fourth solo album, “Dinner Party,” on Friday.
“Dinner Party” is a love album, focusing on the ups and downs as well as the serious situations that come with relationships. While Horan mainly focuses on romantic relationships, he also highlights platonic and brotherly love. The album’s last track, “End of an Era,” focuses on the loss and heartbreak of losing someone. The song was written for Liam Payne, Horan’s former One Direction bandmate who passed away in October 2024.
The album starts with the track “Tastes So Good,” which greets listeners with drums and sets the mood for the whole album. Horan is no stranger to drums in his music, but the ones on this track follow a faster beat compared to those of the past. The song highlights the desire for someone whom you have romantic feelings for.
“Can’t take another breath without you / Can’t walk down the street / No, I don’t know what you’re made of / But it tastes so good to me,” he sings.
As the album continues, the beats to songs weave between slow and fast. Horan’s third track, “Monochromatic,” is the most fast-paced song on the album, with Horan’s smooth voice and repetitive lyrics making the song catchy.
“I get lost in what’s under your fabric / Take it all off till you monochromatic / These three words hiding under your mattress,” he sings in the chorus.
The album’s slower-paced songs focus more on love, admiration and hardship.
The fourth track, “She Gets it from Her Mother,” highlights the love Horan feels for his girlfriend, Amelia Woolley, mentioning some of her qualities, from her fashion and lifestyle to her personality and sense of humor.
Through his lyrics, which look beyond the superficial qualities of love, Horan shows how love can be found in any part of a person’s life. For him, it’s not just about who Woolley is as a person, but also her upbringing that has made him fall completely in love.
He adds more emotion to the fifth track, “Better Man,” which highlights the overthinking that can occur during a relationship. Horan expresses the concern of not being enough and knowing that his girlfriend deserves the best treatment.
This emotion does not come in any harsh tone, but instead, in an admirable way. He sings, “Somebody who will love you better than I can / Maybe there’s a better man.”
Although the album focuses on romance, Horan shows that love cannot be mentioned without complication, such as loss.
In his eleventh track, “Die If I Don’t,” he highlights the complex feelings that come when relationships take a shift. He sings, “I’ll die if I see you and I’ll die if I don’t” and “There’s no prize for who hurts the other more,” to express the struggles in love.
He ends the album with his track “End of an Era,” which focuses on the difficulty of letting things go. He sings, “Tears fall down like the future comes slowly.” Despite all of this, Horan teaches us what love is truly about.
“Dinner Party” emphasizes the need to love deeply and beyond the surface, which can sometimes lead to overthinking. Horan reminds the audience that when things don’t work out, there’s the need to move on, and that with love there’s the good and bad for both romantic and platonic relationships. The album is a refreshing look into what love can look like with catchy beats and lyrics.
