Northwestern continues to reload through the transfer portal, picking up former Drake and South Carolina forward Okku Federiko on Wednesday, according to an announcement on Federiko’s social media pages.
He joins former Northeastern and Elon guard LA Pratt and forwards Jack Karasinski, Luke McEldon and Colin Smith as the players who have signed with NU this offseason.
The Helsinki, Finland native started all 34 games for the Bulldogs after not seeing any action with the Gamecocks as a freshman. He averaged 23.3 minutes per game and 8.6 points per game, the fifth-highest points total on the Bulldogs and the highest-ranking non-forward.
Federiko’s 52.2 shooting percentage ranked second on Drake’s roster, and he led the team in rebounds with 4.8 per game. He also added one block per game.
While the conference began successfully for the Bulldogs with a .500 start, the team lost six games in a row down the stretch. During the losing streak and through the conference tournament, Federiko had just one game in which he scored double-digit points.
Across three games in the conference tournament, including an upset win over one-seeded Belmont, Federiko scored just eleven points. In the win over the Bruins, the six-foot-nine forward did not take a single shot.
His early-season games were much stronger, with Federiko dropping 20 points on 7-for-9 shooting in a win against Georgia Tech and 18 points in a five-point loss to March Madness squad North Dakota State.
Federiko is the fifth transfer coach Chris Collins has picked up after losing nine players to the portal. He joins Karasinski, McEldon and Smith as the veterans in NU’s forward room next year.
Incoming recruits forward Jayden Hodge and center Symon Ghai round out next year’s roster. Hodge plans to be ready for the start of next season after tearing his ACL in January, according to Louie Vaccher of On3.
