ALDEN FARROW: After three years without an album, pop princess Olivia Rodrigo is returning for her newest album, “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.”

The first single, “drop dead,” was heavily anticipated for fans like us. It released on Friday with a music video set in the Palace of Versailles — which itself was a huge deal.
ALDEN FARROW: The song can be classified as “synth-pop” and “pop rock.” In the lyrics, Olivia describes stalking a love interest on the internet and imagining them as a pair. She calls it her “feminine intuition” and says that if they really did kiss, she would “drop dead.”
MELODY XU: A standout lyric for me was “Pisces and a Gemini / But I think we might go really nice together.” This was the most obvious confirmation that Olivia is singing about English actor and ex-boyfriend Louis Partridge. Her Instagram bio has indicated it throughout her entire career —she’s famously a Pisces while he’s a Gemini.

ALDEN FARROW: Anticipation for “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love” began with gradual wall paintings in Los Angeles. The wall began as a shade of purple with Rodrigo’s initials “OR” in black. Then, day-by-day, it became lighter shades until it turned pink. The last stage of the wall finally spelled out the title of the album, “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.”
MELODY XU: The album seems to be pulling inspiration from Rodrigo’s most recent relationship with Partridge. This is somewhat of a pattern for Rodrigo, as fans suspect her first album, “SOUR,” stems from her relationship with actor and singer Joshua Bassett, and “GUTS” loosely referring to her rumored relationship with music producer Zack Bia.
ALDEN FARROW: Rodrigo and Partridge’s relationship was suspected to have lasted from late 2023 to late 2025. They remained mostly private, with few planned public appearances as a pair.
MELODY XU: Some fans predict that the titles of the album’s songs will correspond to the numerous graphic tees Rodrigo wore throughout the “GUTS” tour.
ALDEN FARROW: Shirts said things like “New York City’s never looked so blue,” “Did you get that hint?,” and “Melt with you” for the Netherlands. It’s been speculated that each shirt could coordinate with the 13 tracks on her new album, with roughly the same number of graphic tees worn at the end of her tour.
MELODY XU: This prediction is highly probable as one shirt said “you know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven,’” a lyric from the newest single “drop dead.”
ALDEN FARROW: While “drop dead” is very pop and rock sounding, I still have faith that Rodrigo will include at least one to two ballads in the full album. Rodrigo always has a balance of hard-hitting, fun songs and slower, emotional pieces. I personally favor the ballads, as I feel they are where she really shines. Her first big hit, “drivers license” was an emotional ballad that she absolutely delivered on.
Some other favorites of mine are also slower, like “favorite crime” from “SOUR” and “teenage dream” from “GUTS.” I hope she continues to include a few more emotional ballads in “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love” as well.
MELODY XU: I’m kind of the opposite — I like her rock-inspired songs and am not attached to how many ballads there are on this upcoming album.
As for lyrics, “drop dead” seems like the first chapter to the album’s story, if you will. We have Olivia going down rabbit holes on the internet, hypothesizing about the relationship. It seems like they haven’t met yet, let alone begun dating.
This first single also happens to be Track 1 of the album, according to the Spotify listing. I predict that between now and the album’s release on June 12, Olivia will drop two more singles. I think those will be Track 2 and 3 of the album, and that each song will build on the previous one’s storytelling. We’ll learn more about why Olivia seemed so sad for a girl so in love, but it won’t be until June 12 that we hear the entire story.
My reasoning is that if she revealed all the relationship drama in the singles, there would be less hype for the full album where the world would rush to find out why the couple broke up.
ALDEN FARROW: I think that she will be a little more straightforward with her references to relationships. She’s been vague about which songs are about in the past, because her relationship with Partridge was generally private.
Rodrigo seems unafraid to step into the public eye with a potential love interest, as she appeared with Geese lead singer Cameron Winter the night before “drop dead” was released.
In the same vein as “so american,” very likely about Partridge, I think Rodrigo will be more forthcoming in her new album.
MELODY XU: It’s pretty notable that Olivia has never had a collaborator on one of her own albums.
ALDEN FARROW: This was true in “GUTS” and “SOUR,” but we predict that there’s a high chance of it changing with this new album.
MELODY XU: There’s always been speculation about Olivia collaborating with Sabrina Carpenter — it would definitely break the internet by nodding at their famous “feud” that fueled both of their careers.
ALDEN FARROW: But we think that’s highly unlikely. It would make more sense for Olivia to collaborate with Noah Kahan, Conan Gray or Gracie Abrams, if anyone. It’s obvious that she doesn’t need collaborations to draw hype to her music.
