Picture this: It’s a Saturday morning in the fall. The sun is out, the birds are chirping and, at University Place at Oak Avenue, the Evanston Farmers’ Market is already in full swing.
The farmers’ market celebrated its 50th season this past year. Every Saturday from May to November, about 70 vendors gathered near the Hilton Garden Inn to sell fresh produce, baked goods, flowers, pantry staples and more.
As a student with limited funds, I often found myself strolling through the farmers’ market last season just to chat with vendors and ogle the wares for sale. The market also offered live music each weekend, along with prepared foods to munch on from restaurants like Gotta B Crepes and Cocina Azteca.
The Democratic Party of Evanston also used the farmers’ market this fall for its “Petitions & Produce” campaign in September. DPOE manned two tables at the market, aiming to ramp up voter engagement during the petitioning season. Visitors were encouraged to sign campaign petitions.
Whether it was fostering connections between customers and vendors or kickstarting civic engagement, there’s no doubt about it — the Evanston Farmers’ Market served as a staple community event in 2025, and I look forward to its return this May.
