The 68th Annual Grammys red carpet saw everything, including partial nudity, gown trails and jewels galore. At the ceremony, bedazzled music industry stars attempted to make statements through their looks on the carpet.
Last year’s breakout star, Chappell Roan, began her time on the carpet wrapped in red tulle with her stylist crouched behind her to maintain her dress’ element of surprise. Once the cameras hit Roan, she revealed a borderline nude top look, accompanied by a tulle skirt.
The sheer dress, held up by nipple rings, became a topic of conversation about nudity on the carpet. While quite unexpected, the confidence in her outfit and bravery of an absentee top made Roan’s look phenomenal.
Actress Teyana Taylor conquered the awards season with each and every outfit. Taylor maintained her extremely successful run of red carpet looks with her newest bedazzled Tom Ford dress matched with Tiffany & Co. jewelry. The dress snaked around her body, and its cutouts complimented her figure beautifully.
Best New Artist winner Olivia Dean donned a glamorous Old-Hollywood-esque Chanel gown. The black and white sequin and feather combination made a beautiful, cohesive look.
Another stunning jewel and feather combination was from Best African Music Performance winner and South African singer Tyla’s vintage Dsquared2 dress that dragged behind her with an extended trail. Tyla’s dress was an elegant shade of beige with a relaxed yet flattering fit.
The brightest outfit goes to “Midnight Sun” singer Zara Larsson, who wore a Kevin Germanier two-piece that screamed “summer isn’t over yet.” The hand-beaded floral ensemble looked stunning on the first-time attendee.
Another standout two-piece was rapper Doechii’s presenting outfit. She wore a Givenchy chandelier top and deep red bell skirt, which heavily contrasted her suit-like Thom Browne looks from last year.
The most stunning look of the night was singer Sabrina Carpenter’s custom Valentino dress. Carpenter’s bridal-like tulle and gem piece combined with her relaxed wispy hair made a satisfying combination of relaxed and glamorous.
Unlike the majority of showstopping looks, some artists fell extremely short. Sombr wore a Valentino suit that looked like a disco ball costume. Another awkward look was Rosé’s mini dress mixed with white draping down the sides, styled by Aeri Yun.
Along with calling out Immigration and Customs Enforcement in their speeches, many celebrities wore white pins that read “ICE Out” on their red carpet looks. Stars like Billie Eilish, Justin and Hailey Bieber, Kehlani and Joni Mitchell took to the carpet with the opportunity to publicly call out ICE.
Overall, most artists showed out with unique looks, commonly showcasing a form of sparkle or different textures. Others attempted the same but failed in execution.
The variety on the carpet proved an exciting lineup and most stars have made brave, standout choices. I hope to see similar risks taken in upcoming red carpets for the rest of the awards season.
